Thomas Bangalter x Fred again..

Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk) and Fred Again.. closed down the Centre Pompidou this past weekend in Paris. For the first time in 24 years, Thomas Bangalter played a set without his Daft Punk mask, instead wearing a Varsity cap – a symbolic shift in the evolution of electronic music and a milestone moment for Varsity.

A defining moment in electronic music

Fred again.. performed alongside Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk – described by Rolling Stone Magazine as the “French House Pioneer”. They were joined by Erol Alkan and Pedro Winter for a set that will be remembered as a landmark in modern electronic music. Bangalter is most well known for being half of the duo Daft Punk, who shaped electronic dance music in the 1990s and 2000s.

The performance took place at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, just before the venue closes for five years of renovation. A symbol of Parisian culture, the Pompidou also holds personal meaning for Bangalter. According to Fred again.., Bangalter credited the Pompidou with introducing him to electronic music in 1992 and inspiring him to pursue his own musical career.

For the first time in 24 years, Bangalter stepped behind the decks without his iconic Daft Punk mask, marking his first solo DJ set in 16 years. Replacing the mask – a Varsity Headwear cap. Having performed behind a helmet for decades, Bangalter’s decision to appear unmasked was as significant as his return to the decks itself, unveiling him as a solo DJ and reflecting the evolution of electronic music on a larger scale.

We're proud to have been a small part of this cultural moment – one that reminds our team why we started this journey, and why we continue it every day.
